WAUCHOPE RSL capped off a successful week for the club with a comprehensive outright victory of Port Panthers Pirates at Oxley Oval on Saturday.
The ten-wicket win now puts RSL in the box seat to progress to the finals at the expense of Pirates with less than half a point separating the two sides with one game each left to play.
While the scoreboard shows Pirates were bowled out for 56 and 87 Day admitted it wasn't as easy as that.
"The pitch did a bit but probably wasn't as bad as the score indicated and the score might look like it was easy but it definitely wasn't. It took us all day to take the wickets."
At the start of day two the Wauchope skipper was focussed on securing first innings points when Pirates resumed at 2-19 in pursuit of RSL's 5-140 declared.
He didn't expect 18 wickets to fall in less than a day.
"It was a bloody hot, tough slog out there," he said.
Andrew Murrell was the star with the ball for RSL with four second innings wickets although Day said Matt Miller also bowled with good pace.
"Murrell was a standout and took some vital wickets for us. We were a bit flat at one stage and then he came back for his second spell and turned the tide back towards us," he said.
"Matt Miller was back to the old Matt Miller. He bowled with good pace and picked up a wicket or two."
Day felt his side had probably timed their run to the finals perfectly although he remained wary of looking too far ahead.
They still have a last-round match against Comboyne to play which could determine their finals fate.
"We're probably in a good position, but cricket's a funny game and anything can happen. We'll focus on doing what we need to against Comboyne in the last week but we'll have all the results in place before we play," he said.
"It was a fantastic effort by the boys after winning the twenty20 during the week so now we'll put our feet up and see what happens."
Port City Leagues Magpies secured first innings points over Comboyne after they bowled them out for 71 chasing 149.
When stumps were called Comboyne was 5-49 in its second innings.
