He lives in Forster with his owners, Lorna and Peter Brown, who recently relocated from Victoria.
They have been with Aragorn since he was 12 weeks old and, as expected, he turns heads whenever they are in public.
And so he should. Aragorn weighs a whopping 55 kilograms, stands above the hip height of an average adult male and is so fluffy you can not help but go in for a cuddle.
“He’s such an adorable boy. You can’t get him out of the car without people rushing up to cuddle him,” Lorna said.
“He just stands there and cops it. He is the most loving, affectionate dog.”
The constant mobbing of affection led to a light bulb idea to help kids with cancer.
“When people started rushing to him as a puppy we decided we’d put him to “work” in a way, by raising funds for Kids with Cancer Foundation Australia,” she said.
“We figured that all his attention shouldn’t be wasted and he could do something very worthwhile.
“I’ve also taken him to nursing homes and no one can walk past him without smiling. He brings a smile to everyone’s face and it’s just beautiful.”
Aragorn has his own Facebook page and a special sign with a donation tin attached when they are out for walks in public.
“We don’t ask anyone to donate, but people that come and pat him can if they wish. We do that whenever we take him out,” Lorna said.
“He comes everywhere with us. We knew he would be big but had no idea he would have the temperament he has. It’s unbelievable.”
The first time Aragorn visited a vet, they were taken back by his sheer size, and the fact that he was a breed not often seen.
“He is a real couch potato with a slow metabolism so he only eats biscuits and a bone once a day,” she said.
“The vet said he is in perfect health and the perfect weight.”
A great example of Aragorn’s kind nature was the recent guarding of an injured kookaburra.
“He notified me of this injured kookaburra until I came and rescued it. Normally he scares them away as his breed are protectors of herds, but this particular bird was injured and he knew,” Lorna said.
“The only time Aragorn will let you know he doesn’t like you is if you’re a magpie, because they steal his bones.”
Lorna, Peter and Aragorn are often in and out of Port Macquarie, so if you see him be sure to give generously in exchange for the best doggie hug you will ever get.
